Homemade Ball Rack

Holds 50 balls...$62.50.

Parts List
Three 10"x2"x54" (Uprights) $13.50 ea.
Ten 2"x2"x8' (Crossbars) $1.44 ea.
Three 2"x2"x12" (Feet) $1.44
4" #9 wood screws ~$5
5/16 wood plugs $1.25 pkg

Notes
Cut 1 1/2" deep by 1 3/4" wide slots into the uprights at 2" and then every 10" (measuring from the bottom.) Do this to both sides of each of the three uprights. If you know someone who can do "dado" cuts, clamp all three uprights to each other and have them do it for easier, cleaner cuts. The rack shown was cut with a jigsaw.

The cuts will cause the runners to be 1/4" short of flush from the front of the upright. This looks better than trying to make it exactly flush.

Each hole is started with a #8 pilot-drill bit. A pilot-drill bit will provide a good starter hole and then also make a larger hole to accomodate the screw head. The screw head will sink about 1/4" into the wood, then you cap the wood with a 5/16" wood plug. Name: plug.JPG Views: 24 Size: 13.2 KB

Picture doesn't show the patented "Anti-Tipover" System. Screw in the 12" 2x2's so the 'foot' extends 4". If you have kids that might be tempting to climb this spherodial jungle gym, attach a hook to the middle upright and wire it to a wall stud.

When you buy the wood, ensure that that all pieces are as straight as possible. The cheaper the wood, the less straight pieces available. You do NOT want to wrestle with crooked wood (!) This rack was made with the middle of three quality grades of wood.

I was worried about how I could paint or stain it and not have it come off on a ball so I left it "Unfinished Arizona".

I am not a wood working guy. Anyone can do this. Any questions, just ask.

Re: Homemade Ball Rack

I really like that notching idea you did. Much better than screws I personally think. Just put some gorilla glue in each slot, then slide the piece in.

Very nice!

I'm working on a custom, steel structure.

3 1/2 ft tall
5-6 ft long
3 shelves holding 6-8 balls per shelf

Fit nicely in my room next to my bed, without going over my half-wall from my steps.

Each 2x2 has a countersunk wood screw holding into each notch. I would NOT trust any kind of glue for the constant pressure of 80lbs.

Understandable. I really like the idea though, less worry about splitting wood with all the tapping and such.

Construction on my masterpiece might begin today

If this turns out how I want...it will be so sweet.
3 - 4ft tall
5 - 6 ft long (should hold between 6-8 balls per shelf)
3 shelves

And it will be made of steel and structurally welded, with the runners (shelves) being removable...

So amped up for it to get going. I love having friends who will do stuff like this for me.
