Re: Disqualification at the USBC Open Championship

Good on the USBC for enforcing the averages! People committing the time, money, and effort to participate should be assured that the rules are being followed and enforced. This should bring some peace of mind to bowlers with doubts about the USBC's commitment to their own rules. Hopefully it will also deter other people from trying to buck the system.

Incidentally, I have also noticed in increase in average verification and rules enforcement at local run-of-the-mill tournaments. Perhaps this is a growing trend, and it is definitely for the better!

Re: Disqualification at the USBC Open Championship

USBC (and formerly ABC) has failed to enforce its own rules in so many documented instances, so it's good to see the enforcement of the entering-average rule in this year's Open tournament.

Re: Disqualification at the USBC Open Championship

Funny, this only happens because usbc posted video of said bowler taking the lead in the event. That leads to several people posting how there is no way this guy averages under 209 and then starts questioning his previous tournament averages etc.

USBC only followed through because they opened a can or worms on social media and got a lot of backlash.

Bet we see a lot fewer highlight videos now, particularly from the Standard Division.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Chad has been very vocal about wanting to increase the awareness and the integrity of the process, and that's exactly why they created the third division and then told everybody what to expect.

It wasn't awareness on social media. People were questioning these guys on site, especially since they are both college bowlers who spend a hell of a lot of time on sport compliant patterns.

Re: Disqualification at the USBC Open Championship

I just ran across this article and one of the DQ'ed bowlers this year and the man suspended in 2014 are one and the same. I guess once a cheat always a cheat.

This boys and girls is the reason sandbagging is so despised, shaving pins to gain an advantage is cheating and there is no place in bowling for cheaters.

...can someone elaborate on who these individuals are? maybe a little more about their background?

Wow, and I thought this was a "sandbagging" problem. I had no idea that blatant pin shaving existed. Purposely writing incorrect scores on the re-cap sheet? That is something that should be considered for more than a 1 year suspension...

Russ Meyer, North Dakota HoF'er and verified cheat

Bradley Nordick, (former?) college mvp, regular CASH'er on sport/competition conditions

Chad (Murphy), USBC Executive Director

It wasn't on the evening's recap sheets, it was as secretary of the league he turned in lower year end average for himself.

That's as bad as it can get then, grounds for a lifetime ban

And, from what I can read from an 11th Frame article (not subscribed), Russ Meyer declares this (2017 USBC Championship action) is a continuation of a "witch hunt" from his 2014 suspension.

I believe he just got caught again.

Yeah, that needs to be a permanent ban.

Sorry, but you can fudge the numbers for your average and expect to claim all the rewards for bowling well. Takes a big ego to think no one would catch or say something.

A witch hunt, by definition, is when someone is accused or convicted of a crime with little or no evidence, or the evidence is manipulated. You know, like throwing a woman tied down with weights into a river, and if she floats, she's a witch. If she doesn't, oh well.

Meyer was conclusively shown to have reported false scores over more than a year's time, shaving pins from his own totals (in TWO leagues!) while also seeking to claim high series awards. That's not even sandbagging, which is hard to prove. That's just blatant fraud and lying, which is pretty simple to find. The numbers clearly supported the case against him.

So, if it were a witch hunt, the USBC would have not reinstated his membership. They did. He got a second chance.

He came back. He cheated again. He got caught again.

He should be gone for the rest of his life.
