Thumb Tape Comparisons

TL;DR I need a tape to cover my thumb with a quick release that will stay on my thumb for an entire set.

Can anyone recommend me a tape to use on my thumb? I starting using Brunswick's thumb sock several years ago when I started gaining and losing weight. I hate the way tape feels on the pad of my thumb, and I used to have rubbing issues with the back of my thumb. The sock took care of all of those issues, and now it's been discontinued and I'm on my last one.

My biggest reservation to trying any kind of tape is the fact that I have hyperhidrosis in my hands and sweat profusely. I'm afraid the tape won't be able to stay on for an entire set. I'm not keen on having to constantly re-tape. The sock fit snug enough that I don't think about it until I take it off.

The sock gives me a quick release against the tacky white tape, so I would like to replicate that feel with tape. It was suggested to use the "thumb saver" but it has a textured pad on the thumb and I don't want something wrapping around my hand.

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

The ones left on Amazon are too large, and I will definitely get some from the 2nd link.

How are you using Velcro for your thumb?

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

I get cheap self stick velcro knock-off at Walmart. Use the fuzzy, soft side. I think it's 3/4 wide and I cut it into 2" strips. Then cut a curve on the top like white thumb tape has. Just put your thumb against it and cut around the tip. Put it into the back of the thumbhole about 1/4 down with the curve up.

The thumb will feel pretty tight, but come out lightning fast. If you stick in the ball, it needs to go a bit farther down than 1/4. If you drop it, put it in less deep. The stuff is compressible, thus adapts well. It does not absorb moisture and can save a summer league.

This is something like "Ron C's Magic Carpet", which is hard for me to get.

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

I tried the magic carpet but it took up too much room in the hole.

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

Other than Rev's absolutely ingenious idea:

I recently switched thumb tape as my old tape was discontinued. I tried a bunch, but settled on Storm THunder tape. Excellent wearability, flexibility, and is relatively cheap.

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

I like the Turbo green and the Lind's flesh colored. The Linds is super, super fast, and because of its adhesive, I've never had it come loose. Same for the mint green. I literally cannot bowl without it anymore.

If you have a hard time with tape sticking you can try applying some antiperspirant to the back of your thumb.

They actually have antiperspirant for hands, some proshops have it.

Master "Control Grip" , Kegel "No Sweat" and there's "Dry Grip" for golfers and some spray on Right guard should work also (Just matter of how long it lasts).

Put it on a little while before bowling and wash&dry your hands first.

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

The thumb saver has a textured tip on the thumb, I don't need that extra grip. I will look into the antiperspirants for my hand. Thank you for the suggestion!

My Pro Shop / driller guy(s) told me about 3M Drywall Screens to open up the thumb hole. Can be found @ any Hardware store. Cut strips to your desire size and use it to widen the hole. Never thought of that before, and makes sense to me. I had some in the garage and now some resides in my bag.

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

I **ALWAYS** have a few drywall screens pre-cut in my kit.

I did learn the hard way: use a dowel or pencil. If you use your finger, that screen gets hot, and I burned my finger that way. Ouch.....

Re: Thumb Tape Comparisons

Before I found my perfect thumb hole, i used to use the Storm Thunder tape and also had issues with it sticking through a whole set.

What I would do it put the tape on, then use skin protector on the outside edges to glue it to my thumb.

I now use a vise-it with a 29/32 x 15/16 oval, and trained myself to stop squeezing with the thumb. Even with sweaty hands, I can use a thumb hole so tight I'm amazed my hand is still connected after throwing it. Your grip can change as you gain/lose weight, so you might try getting refitted if you have gone through either over the last few years. My grip changed substantially after dropping 30 lbs.
