Finding a Solid #2 Ball

Hi Guys

Im looking at possibly acquiring a solid #2 ball. One that can roll from medium to heavy and would be a good tweener from the two balls i throw which are a Tyrant and Hectic. I wish I can say I have particular preference of brand ball. Used to be Track but havent been enamored with recent ball lines theyve had. Its been while since Ive thrown a Hammer, and wasnt sure Id go with another Columbia 300 or Roto Grip Again. I do like how the balls rolls when I throw the Hectic more so than when i throw the Tyrant.

My pro shop had recommended balls like the Hammer Phobia and Hammer Rebel

I was looking at the Swerve GT or Hammer Dark Legend or maybe the Gamebreaker MVP 2

I throw mid 15-16 mph.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

So what he is looking for, you are going to recommend an international ball that is hard to get?

Re: Finding a Solid #2 Ball

I would suggest a Lane Masters Mighty Kong. Fit very well in between those 2.

Do you not trust your Pro Shop operator? He'd probably be much more help than anyone on a bowling forum that have never seen you bowl.

Re: Finding a Solid #2 Ball

Nah Its Not a question of trust. Again Ive not thrown a hammer in quite sometime. Just gauging other balls. As for trusting a pro shop over a forum. It depends if your believe that I solely depend on just the forum. I purchased my Tyrant through recommendation of my pro shop. I inquired about a good ball on medium to dry lanes and guys on here recommended the Roto Grip Hectic. I researched it, felt good about it purchased it and have been averaging 200+ average when i needed to switch to it. Dont think theres anything wrong with getting suggestions and then coming back to your pro shop to inquire about those balls right?

Re: Finding a Solid #2 Ball

If you like the Hectic maybe try a Dare Devil or Dare Devil Trick (maybe with a little compound on it) ? Several Dare Devils around here and they roll great.

Re: Finding a Solid #2 Ball

Agreed on the daredevil being a good inbetween ball I'd say that or the hywire also it's pretty hard to go wrong with a storm hy road or if you are looking at hammer the phobia would probably be your best bet also if you wouldn't mind motiv the venom shock is a really good ball

I got mine on Bowlersmart.com and Ebay has them too. Not hard to get at all.

Re: Finding a Solid #2 Ball

"My pro shop had recommended balls like the Hammer Phobia and Hammer Rebel

For medium to medium heavy, good proven pieces (that I have or have thrown)in the EBI line-up:
GB2 phenom: great arcing rolly predictable piece
Sideswipe solid: little longer than GB2 phenom, but stronger arcing motion, also predictable (my fav ball at the moment)
Dark Legend: more length than the 2 above, turns the corner a bit sharper

Phobia is a longer rolly piece with some downlane motion: I have this ball with the pin in the palm, it really rolls better for me with some surface on it

the Swerve FX & GT are better pieces IMO, the swerve stood up on me and tumbled to much. the swerve FX is an awesome piece, pearl, earlier motion, stronger arcing and continuous

the Hammer Scandal Pearl is also a very good piece, stronger pearl

Many more options in the EBI line-up
Rebel is more of medium to medium light ball IMO

Re: Finding a Solid #2 Ball

When you asked for a solid #2 I wasn't sure if you meant solid cover stock or solid as in dependable.

What is your Rev rate, tilt, axis rotation, PAP? What do you bowl on, how long is the pattern, how much oil? For example: I'm a 14MPH (Downlane at the monitor), Sr bowler, 240 Rev Rate per Kegel, 20 degrees of tilt on average, 55 degree axis rotation on average.
Do you have a video of you bowling? Armed with this info we can make more educated recommendations.

I bowl in two very different centers. One has Qubica HPL SP2 and lower volume of oil. This surface is higher friction than the Brunswick Anvilane in the other center. Both lay down 42 ft house shots, BUT, one is 19 units of mystery oil, the other uses 27 units of Infinity oil.
This is the long way around of saying I can't use the same balls without tweaking the surface. So that leaves me and everybody else to only speak in generalities.

My favorite ball is a Chronic Paranoia, when I can use it, so, in general, its my tournament ball for heavier volumes. My #2 these days is a Dare Devil Trick that I just bought two weeks ago. I use 3000 on the heavier volume house, 4000 sheen in the higher friction house.

Whatever you decide on, don't be afraid to tweak the surface to customize to ball motion to your game. I always use 4000 as my baseline and tweak from there. That's what works for me. The "box" finish never makes to the lane. The ball may end up at the alleged box finish but I always establish a baseline with 4k.
