Asked to coach HS bowling

Well, more of an assistant coach, but I'm happy to help. I used to coach youth bowling, but I found that many of the kids could careless about getting better. I'm hoping that these kids will be more receptive to coaching as their current coach is a great guy, good bowler but I don't think he understands exactly how to improve the kids mechanics and mental game. I feel like I bring alot to the table wrt mechanics, adjustments and mental game.

First practice is tomorrow, any words of wisdom before I dive into this?

I coached my sister's HS team last year and it was a lot of fun. Ended up winning state and had a couple kids go to college, so that definitely makes it a little sweeter. I found that most of the kids really wanted to get better. Especially if they know that you're actually a good bowler.

Good bowlers don't always equal good coaches.

Curious. Did you have any problems with concentration & electronic devices, ie; cell phones, I-pads, etc, or were the kids pretty focus most times? Great that you took the time to coach them.

True. But if you're qualified to coach, and they know that you can bowl on top of it, they're more inclined to pay attention.

It's impossible to keep teenage girls from playing on their phones, but so long as we stayed busy with different drills, they did a pretty good job of paying attention.

Re: Asked to coach HS bowling

What kind of coaching experience do you have? Have you ever done certification thru USBC or anything like that?

Re: Asked to coach HS bowling

Well, the first practice was interesting the say the least. I expected the vast majority of the kids to be seasoned bowlers and had bowled before. However, about 1/2 of the kids are complete novice bowlers, many have never bowled in a league before. I worked with those kids for the practice session helping them understand the very basics of bowling. We have practice 2x a week, so myself and the other coach are going to alternate groups each session. He wants me to help more with mechanics, lane play and such with the more accomplished bowlers and new kids. Many of these kids don't have shoes or even their own bowling ball. Its going to be a fun year.

I've coached youth/adult bowling on/off for 15 years. No, I've not gone thru the USBCs program.

Keep it fun during competition. (Control your emotions, you'll be surprised at the emotional roller coaster of sentiments the kids and you will experience)

Re: Asked to coach HS bowling

I think that teaching them how to score could help to improve their focus. I am including a few types of scoring/targeting templates that you might have your students fill out during the sessions. These are available without licensing costs. You just cannot re-sell as most are copyrighted.

For more advanced students, you might also suggest they download a bowling stats app (like "Pin Pal") that can be used on their cell phones. Most of these types of apps cost under $10, and would also help them to keep focused on bowling.

Re: Asked to coach HS bowling

Having 2 in high school bowling, their team has a box or bag. ALL CELL PHONES go in when they arrive, and are silenced. They get them back at the end of practice.

For emergencies, everyone (parents) has the coach's cell number. They don't have any issues.
