Everything OLD is NEW again!

So, is research and development that difficult or have the ball companies finally run out of ideas?

Storm is trotting out the Marvel Pearl...again.

Hammer seems to be a habitual offender as they will be dropping 3 re-makes very soon...The Diesel, as well as the Cherry and Blue Vibes. That's not mentioning the re-makes of the Blue, Black, and Burgundy Hammers.

Another habitual offender is Brunswick, as they've decided to drop re-makes of the Gold Rhino's, Quantum's and Zone's as well as an upcoming Original Inferno re-release.

I'm sure I've missed a few, but my point is, was the older stuff that good, or are there just that many fans of the old stuff that manufacturers discovered a niche market?

Opinions or thoughts?

The cores and covers are not the same. They are using a recognized model name and existing fan base.

I don't mind that they're doing it. I'll probably pick up at least one of the Hammer Vibes, even tho I already have both the originals.

Re: Everything OLD is NEW again!

I don't mind it. It seems R&D may be limited, but I'm not sure without talking with people who work in R&D for the companies.

The newest hook monsters do me no good outside of tournaments in Vegas. Right now it seems like an overload of balls in the medium-light oil categories and I welcome it.

I bet the Vibe core has been turned upside down on the new releases

I suppose the reviews will be re-run too? As in "copy & paste"... We shall see, I'd guess.

Re: Everything OLD is NEW again!

If you honestly think something is new then you are buying the hype. There is no new ball shape or ball motion we haven't seen. The lanes haven't been widen to accommodate all of the next biggest hook monsters that are released on ever release.

Core specs all have to fit within usbc guidelines so you are capped on new. Only different shapes with the same promises.

New hasn't happened since the early 2000s only marketing.

I don't know about the core being upside down, but I do think it resembles something out of the Bomb line of balls that came from Lane #1 some years ago...just sayin'

Re: Everything OLD is NEW again!

I wouldn't assume core placement based off pics. It varies on all of the balls likey for visual affect. Core specs are the same, shape is the same, no mention of taking your favorite vibes and inverting the core to give you new reaction x, y, or z......which you know they would for marketing hype.

Re: Everything OLD is NEW again!

The remake that I am shocked that never came back was the Yellow Dot Bleeder! I found out why. The current white dots are as soft as the old yellow dots. Around 75. I think the "legal" Yellows were 72 as I recall. Most of them ended up being 60-72! I saw a Pro Classic once that was 40!

The Yellow Dot Bleeder, (and the Pro Classics they made for AMF) were balls that actually did not cure. A Columbia ball rep told me this years ago. So the ones they made in 1978, 1979 were NOT the same Yellow Dots they made in 1977 and 1980 and beyond. That was a polyester molecule that did not harden with the catalyst. Columbia had several of these SO2 Resin balls as they called it back then. The Sur D was the same way. They were trying to make ball soft to get rid of the soaker problem, unfortunately soft polyester balls did not last long, and if you placed inserts in them, they would bust out almost immediately. Basically today's reactive resin is the legal Yellow Dot Bleeder, except they do not bleed like the old Yellow Dots. Anyone over 50 will know what I am talking about. When Steve Cropper came out with the X Calibur, he called it a urethane bleeder. When they added a plasticizer to urethane, it basically became a bleeder.

Re: Everything OLD is NEW again!

To further my point:
Polyester= a polyester polyol and a catalyst.
Urethane= a polyester polyol, an isocyanate molecule, and a catalyst.
Reactive Resin= a polyester polyol, an isocyanate molecule, a catalyst, and a plasticizer.

The Marvel Pearl is the exception. Well, kind of.... With the variance of the base materials from lot to lot they will try to get it as close as possible. It is also supposed to be a limited release.
When I attended the Storm round table last year at Boardwalk the request for the Marvel Pearl was made by several pro shops and from what I heard it was also made at the other round tables they held across the country.
