Smoothing out inside of thumb slug

I just got a ball drilled and the thumb slug is rough on the inside. The one I had done a couple of years ago was rough too however I smoothed it out but I don't remember using acetone. Are there other ways to smooth out the inside of a slug besides acetone? Also, all I have is brush cleaner which has acetone in it. Will that work? The pro shop hours and mine don't mesh so getting back by there before next week's league is going to almost be impossible and would like to fix so that I can practice are a different center closer to where I work. All help is appreciated.

If is just rough, I have had luck with talcum powder and plain newspaper.

If it is really rough, some very fine grit sandpaper could help, but have to be careful not to actually make the hole bigger. 1500 or 2000 grit should do fine.

Re: Smoothing out inside of thumb slug

On urethane slugs 1500-2000 may not cut thru enough material to smooth out sanding scratches from a bevel sander. Most bevel sanding disc are 100 or 180 before use. I used to have two sanders, one with used 180 and one with new 180. If I needed to open a hole up I added a new 100 disc to remove material, then followed with the worn 180.

The maroon scotch brite is about 360 grit and would be a good start, followed by 400, then 600. Then 1500-2000 if needed. Also, if the sanding scratches are deep, there may be a sanding ridge at the thumb hole. It can be remover easily with a general (brand) 6 inch ruler, by scraping the top edges of the thumb hole with the edge. The ruler is inexpensive and comes in handy as a tape insert/removal tool.

Re: Smoothing out inside of thumb slug

Thanks for the replies. It's just rough like white tape, which I do not care for. Will try the extra fine sandpaper as I don't want to take much off and risk opening the hole up larger.

Fine sandpaper or a compound like ruff buff.

dry wall screen.....holds up great and smooths out well. 320 grit or fine works for me.

Re: Smoothing out inside of thumb slug

I used medium steel wool with great results. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
