Bowling ball questions

I have a friend that said i should soak my bowling ball to remove the oil from it. Is that true? I also am wondering if ball cleaner does the same thing. If you could help me out i'd really appreciate it.
P.S. How long do I soak it for?

Re: Bowling ball questions

My favorite way of getting oil out of a ball is the leave it in the trunk of my car and just wipe it off with alcohol every once in a while!

The absolute best way is to let the proshop dude take it out for you. That is the safest route. But if you want to do it yourself... you can soak it in warm water with some detergent. Don't let the water get too hot though as you run the risk of the ball cracking due to the drastic change in temps. Another route you can take it nailing the ball with a hairdrier & wiping off the excess oil with alcohol & a rag ( preferrably microfiber ).

Good Luck!

Re: Bowling ball questions

As for how long... good question. *L* I would leave it aslong as the water got close to room temp. The detergent will lift the oil to the surface. Also doing this would leave the ball with enough time to cool down to room temp or as close to it as possible. If you want quicker results... do the hairdrier thing. I tried this once and it was too messy for me.

Hot water, straight off the tap but not so hot you can not stand to have your hand in it for more than a minute. Basically, the temp you would take a bath in.
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of DAWN dishwashing detergent AFTER the water is in the bucket. Froth it around a bit but do not make too many suds.
Let the ball soak for 20-30 minutes, remove and wipe off with alcohol.
Repeat process, with fresh water, till oil is gone.

-OR-

Place in dishwasher, holes down. run ONE cycle with the heat dry option OFF. Select air dry. You will need to replace all tape and probably your inserts afterwards, but it's a muck quicker and safer process.

Re: Bowling ball questions

i use el dishwasher, and it works great for me

no detergents or soap, and NO heated drying cycle.

the water gets up to 130 degrees and the aggitation gets rid of the oil.

when you take it in to a pro shop they put it in a machine that takes it up to a 140 degrees, and wipes the oil off as it rotates.

i let the ball air dry for 24 hours before bowling , and i cover the holes w/ tape so they don't get saturated.

works great for me
